OOC ♱ CHARACTER SURVEY
Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
He’s short and light and probably skinnier than is healthy what with those teeny-tiny, bone-thin wrists Kubo draws. The official stats say he’s about 4’4 and 62 lbs.
2. How old is he?
Speculation generally says he’s about 40, and I agree that it makes sense, though I like to think he’s somewhere between 35 and 40. He looks more like he’s 10 or 12.
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
He’s extremely proud (however easily that pride can be broken) and he holds himself as such. Besides, he can’t afford to lose any more height to a slouch.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
He’s fit, light and speedy and yet still able to wield his fairly large zanpakutou. No illnesses or disabilities.
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
He’s very tense, sometimes even a little jerky if he’s anxious. When he does manage to pull off fluid or graceful motion (most often in close combat with Hyourinmaru) , it’s ended or interrupted by an abrupt stop or a sudden jerk in another direction.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
Well, um. A pedophile would hone in on him right away? He’s regarded as a very good looking character, but in most of the art depicting him he doesn’t look his age. I really don’t think he’d give his appearance a thought unless he was meeting other captains or had a reason to be professional. But I imagine he wouldn’t have any full-length mirrors; no reason to remind himself of his height.
7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
It’s sometimes difficult to tell, but generally his complexion is nicely tanned. If he has scars, they’re hidden under his shikakushou.
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
It’s white and has the tendency to stick out like with so many anime males. Either the closer he became with Hyourinmaru, the more strands began to hold themselves up, or the older he grew, the friendlier he got with his bottle of hair gel. Either way, a small patch of bang that hangs over his left eye and the hair at his neck are the only sections that remain affected by gravity.
9. What color are his eyes?
His eyes are a teal green, almost but not quite blue.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
Not particularly.
11. What are his chief tension centers?
Most of his aggravation tends to accumulate in the center of his forehead. Brow twitches galore, and I imagine him pinching the bridge of his nose when especially stressed or during a headache.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
Never any bright colors. His shihakushou is what he wears the most, obviously, but when wearing anything else it’s pretty plain and often black, blue, or white. The anime depicted his outfit as a kid in Rukongai as green, but it’s still fairly pastel.
13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
Again, I don’t think he’d give this much thought. His clothes fit him, but that may just be the only requirement he needs. His priority in the living realm seems to be making himself less conspicuous, thus there’s no point in anything flashy.
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
Well, a uniform is required on the job, so no. The differences are few and far between, except that the clothes he wears otherwise are tighter than his shihakushou.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
O-Oh my. Um. Let’s go with boxers.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
It’s always been difficult for me to describe things like voices, but if I had to describe Hitsugaya’s I’d say it’s resonating. It isn’t high-pitched, but it isn’t deep either. It’s sort of thick and saturated, a beautiful singing voice. And it’s strong even when it’s quiet. This Light I See is sung by his seiyuu.
2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
He speaks pretty evenly, a normal volume. At least, in normal situations. He can screams pretty darn loud and for insanely long amounts of time when he wants to.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
I don’t know the Japanese language well enough to pick out something like that, but from what I’ve seen, he doesn’t.
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
He speaks Japanese as it’s the native language of Soul Society, but I imagine he speaks English pretty well too.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
Not that I know of.
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
He spends a lot of time thinking, too much time really. I’m pretty sure he has to think about what he’s going to say too.
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
He’s very straight-forward. He’s definitely not inarticulate, but if there’s no reason to say something, he won’t say it. He doesn’t elaborate often unless he’s asked, and he never embellishes.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Hitsugaya is regarded as a genius and a child prodigy. He’s more book-smart than street-smart, but he has plenty of experience in both categories, and he recognizes that just sticking to one or the other is bad strategy.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
The way he handles his fight with Ichimaru shows he can definitely think on his feet, but when he has more time, he takes it.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
He’s logical and practical, very pragmatic. He looks for facts and connects them together to make things make sense. His emotions tend to get ahead of his mind despite himself though.
4. What kind of education has the character had?
Well, he made it through the Shinigami Academy in about a year, I believe. Other than that, any sort of education he would have had in Soul Society would probably have been given to him by his granny.
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
He’s talented with his zanpakutou, and he’s constantly trying to work things out, a little like a detective. He tends to be one of the first to figure out what’s happening, but rarely is he able to do anything about it. I think at this point in time, he’d be interested in learning more about the people around him. It goes against his nature for the most part, but after Aizen’s betrayal, his time in Karakura, etc. he must realize that it pays to be able to read people and understand what they’re thinking.
6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
He’s an introvert through and through. He spent a great deal of his time in Rukongai with no one to talk to but his Obaa-san and Hinamori, and he’s kept that mindset ever since.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
Hitsugaya is serious and pessimistic, driven and determined. Rarely ever is he happy about something, and when he is it’s short-lived. Despite his dependency on logic and facts, it’s pretty darn easy to get him angry. He tends to move through cycles of angry, brooding, suspicious, and back to angry.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
He’s pretty curt, and doesn’t tell people more than he thinks they need to know. Usually he’ll get frustrated with them because they don’t recognize that he’s not a kid.
9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
I’d say he’s more likely to react only because his life in normalcy is something he’s okay with. It’s only when something happens to disrupt it that he takes action.
10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
Definitely fight. And he will go down fighting, so long as something (usually someone) doesn’t take priority.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
He is known for having no sense of humor whatsoever. Really, he just doesn’t see what’s so funny about stupid, obnoxious jokes. He has a thing for sarcasm, and I can see the right kind of gallows humor getting a bit of a wry smirk out of him.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
Nope.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
His second meeting with Matsumoto was what prompted him to grow up and become a shinigami. And although it’s only movie canon, since I wrote it into his Adstring history, his friendship with Kusaka and the end of said friendship I believe helped to define his goals within the ranks of the shinigami. Of course, learning Hyourinmaru’s name and his defeat by Aizen also helped to mold him.
14. What does he fear?
What Hitsugaya fears most is failure. His failures tend to cost him a whole lot.
15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
A lot of this is largely my take on him, but I believe his intentions within the Gotei 13 are to rise to a position of power in which he has the ability and the authority to make sure people can live as they want to. He doesn’t want to see anyone else go through what he did with Kusaka or what people went through during Aizen’s betrayal. What he wants most is to be able to prevent those things with his own power.
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
That he actually cares. He cares a whole lot. He cares about what people think of him, about people’s well-being, and about people in general. But showing that is showing his weakness, that he actually can be hurt and betrayed and that he still wants love and attention like a child would.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
The closest thing he has to any parents is his granny. He seems to have been taking care of her just as much as she had been taking care of him, so he always felt responsible for her well-being. He was shocked when she didn’t blame him and instead encouraged him when he told her about his reasons for following Hinamori to Seireitei, and that may just have been the only time he’s ever cried that we’ve seen. So obviously she’s very, very special to him.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
The closest thing he has to a sibling is Hinamori, though they’re not related. Their relationship is a lot like a sibling rivalry. They call each other names, don’t show each other any real respect, and yet at the end of the day, Hitsugaya would do anything to make sure she was safe.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
Nope. He has no blood relatives at all, as far as I’m aware.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
The two people listed above, as well as Matsumoto Rangiku.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
I’m going to have to say Matsumoto for this one. Most people say Hinamori, but I think their relationship is brother/sister enough that Ran qualifies more for the best friend category. She found him in Rukongai, and even though she did it rather poorly, she stood up for him. She was also the one who told him about his leaking reiatsu, and thus she’s the reason his Obaa-san is still alive. Their friendship has a strong base in loyalty and sympathy; despite being so different, they really understand each other. They met when Rangiku’s boobs slammed the back of his head into a counter top; they haven’t stopped haunting him since.
6. Does he have other close friends?
He has a lot of respect for Ukitake, and I imagine they’ve had more than a few little tea parties together. And then there’s Kusaka. It’s obvious Hitsugaya was happy during his Academy years, and it’s obvious that that was because of Kusaka. In Adstring canon, he’s gotten really close to Sasuke, and he’s slowly getting there with Al and just a liiiiittle with Tamaki.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
He has a lot of trouble getting along with people. His personality is too cold and curt. But those few who can get past that reach his radars.
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
I don’t believe he sees any difference between the two. His family is basically just a friend anyway.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
Technically still married. Single and not looking.
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
Nope.
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
I’d say Hinamori was probably his first crush, but I doubt it lasted long. He’s too strict with himself to see her that way. Sasuke’s his most recent.
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
He isn’t looking for a romantic partner. Just the mention would probably leave him speechless. But I think he’d want someone who was quiet and who not only could put up with his gruffness but understand what he leaves unsaid.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
No. He doesn’t want any. Period.
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
He might consider Ichigo to be somewhat of a rival, though perhaps he’s more of an annoyance because he has a tendency to get in the middle of things. Aizen and Ichimaru qualify as his main enemies though. He’d give his life to see them dead.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?
Well, I can’t honestly say because he really hasn’t gone through puberty yet or shown any interest in either gender. If his blushes when Matsumoto boob!hugs him are any indication to something other than simple embarrassment, then he’s at least bisexual. But I play him around the 2-4 area, wut.
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
I think he could probably go without it for his entire life. He’s got willpower, man.
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Talking about anything romantic, sexual, or related will likely get either no reaction, an annoyed reaction, or an embarrassed reaction. He doesn’t have anything even remotely resembling these things.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
Hitsugaya is a Sagittarius and doesn’t really fit the mold very well, especially considering it’s a fire sign.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
He’s neither, really. He relies more on himself than on deities or something related. He’d probably see religion in a negative light at this point, what with Aizen calling himself a god.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
He does, and it’s revealed to go against what people generally expect more than once. I don’t think it began at any particular moment. As he grew older, he just began to expect certain things of himself, and if he didn’t live up to those things, he considered it a failure. It would probably take a threat against someone’s life to get him to act against his own morals; and that someone would have to be pretty darn important.
4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
He’s pretty indifferent so long as those beliefs don’t cause him problems.
5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
I’m not sure I’d call it a prejudice, but he has a small problem with authority. He’ll follow the rules and be good until he decides he has to do something else, and then no amount of rules or regulations thrown in his face will stop him from putting his own wants over those of the whole. Actually, because of his younger age compared to a lot of shinigami, he hasn’t had enough time to learn any.
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
He’s pretty comfortable. Captains are paid handsomely, I’d assume, but he’s not the type to go around buying expensive trinkets anyway.
2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
Being a captain in Seireitei puts you in a fairly high status alone; there are only thirteen of them after all. But he came from Rukongai, not from a noble family, so it’s not any higher than that. He’d prefer it that way, better that it be earned. He went from a childish, shy brat in Rukongai to a straight-forward, strict military captain. You tell me how much it affected him.
3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
I’d guess he has an apartment, like a place set aside in each division compound for the captain to use. It wouldn’t be much more than a place to sleep; he spends too much time in the office. I like to think that it’s pretty messy, piles of junk he didn’t want in the office and didn’t have anywhere else to store it.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
Books, I’d say. And maybe a cleaning service.
5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
He’s the captain of the Tenth Division of the Gotei 13, and he’s very good at it. I think he enjoys it more than he’d enjoy doing anything else (not that he really enjoys anything at all), not because of the work but because of what gets accomplished on the whole.
6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
Practicing his swordsmanship is probably a major part of his time. Most everything he does is to improve himself.
7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
I’d think he’d be pretty solid in his eating habits. Simple breakfast, simple lunch, tea, simple dinner. But he’d probably skip out on meals if he was absorbed in his work. No alcohol, and absolutely no candy.

Which of the following do you associate with the character:
1. Color? Teal
2. Smell? That smell that hits you when you walk out into the cold air at 6 in the morning.
3. Time of day? Sunset
4. Season? Winter
5. Book? Dances with Wolves
6. Music? "The Good Left Undone" by Rise Against
7. Place? The roof
8. Substance? Snow
9. Plant? Watermelon
10. Animal? Wolf
